Self-Hosting: Containers, the Easy Way!

In the last blog post, we have set up Ubuntu Server with automatic updates, so we don’t have to do things. But now our server does nothing yet. I want many things on here. Home Automation, my own personal cloud, my own media server, everything! For this, there’s an amazing solution: Containers!

After I got the hardware in the last blog, it was time for software. We of course need to make some choices here in relation to operating system, but what are our goals?

  • Have a system that’s easy to get help with
  • Maintenance should be kept to a minimum

I’ve been wondering what would be a great home server? I’ve been messing with Raspberry Pi’s for a long time, but it’s annoying managing multiple ‘machines’. It ended up with me not really using any of the services hosted on it, since I felt like I was more a system administrator.

So it’s time for a ‘regular computer’ to use as a server. What are my wishes?
